Elton John and Jesus
Friday, February 19th, 2010This week there will be an article going out in the Parade section of the Kansas City Star. Parade is a publication that is added to the Sunday edition of 270 major newspapers around the country with a circulation of nearly 77 million readers. This week in the Parade magazine there is an interview with Elton John in which he says the following:
“I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you’re as good as dead.”
I am most disturbed by this quote because it will be read by so many around the world as truth, yet it couldn’t be further from the truth. There are several issues that I want to expose in this quote: first that of seeking to make Jesus out to be like whoever we are. It is openly known that Elton John is a gay man and therefore he has decided that Jesus has to be like him. This is not true. Jesus is above and better and Sovereign over me, yet He understands my temptations and trials. That’s what makes Jesus as God and man so amazing. Jesus was not gay, he was holy and separate from sin. Second, yes Jesus was compassionate and forgiving but in wanting us to be like Him, He told us that the only way that this could happen was if we experienced God’s forgiveness through His death, burial and resurrection. Mankind is not naturally good and compassionate, nor are we naturally forgiving and considerate of each other. So, while I believe there is some truth to what Elton John says, (Jesus was compassionate, forgiving, loving) the rest of his statement completely contradicts the testimony of scripture. Friends, be careful as to what you read and believe. Check it with the word of God!
Homosexuality is a sin that will send you to Hell if it isn’t forgiven, just like fornication, lying and theft. With that in mind, in response to the idea that a woman who is a homosexual in Arab countries being as good as dead, I believe that fact to be a product of the sinfulness of mankind also. Is she deserving of death, just as much as any other garden variety sinner, but I don’t see many in Arab countries killing fellow countrymen that struggle with lust in their minds, yet this is the same according to Jesus. The only sufficient answer for all of these thoughts is Jesus Christ as the Son of God laying down His life on our behalf and atoning for our sins. It wasn’t that He was some nice, touchy-feely guy hanging on the cross as a result of a terrible misfortune. He was purposely atoning for my sin and the sin of every sinner. So, lest we see Jesus simply as an example to us to simply make our world a little better, I suggest we bow and worship Him as the one and only Savior.
